New Bypass via OMR can Reduce Travel Time to Pondicherry by 30 Minutes
If you are travelling to Mahabalipuram and Puducherry via Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), there is some good news for you as the Tamil Nadu Road Development Company (TNRDC) has commenced works for laying two six-lane bypass roads at Kelambakkam and Tiruporur. Motorists driving to Mahabalipuram travelling through the proposed two bypass roads along OMR will no longer have to go through traffic congestion at Tiruporur and Kelambakkam junctions. In addition, the proposed project, estimated to cost 201 crores, connects ECR - OMR link roads

A point to note here is that the development has come in spite of the land acquisition issues.  On weekend and festive sessions, traffic congestion is more pronounced at the junctions as OMR has link roads to East Coast Road (ECR) and Grand Southern Trunk (GST) Road.
The proposed Kelambakkam bypass road starts at Pudur on OMR and extends up until Thaiyur village covering a distance of 4.67 km with Kelambakkam junction untouched, whilst the Tiruporur bypass road, which is 7.45 km long, will link Thandalam with Kalavakkam village without touching Tiruporur junction.
As part of the project, soil road has been created for around 1km at Pudur and Kalavakkam villages along OMR. Having a major bridge and two minor bridges, the road will pass through Kelambakkam, Padur, Kalavakkam, Thaiyur B, Thandalam and Tirupporur villages.
The six-lane dual carriageway bypass of 33-metre width will have 10.5-metre carriageway on either side, in addition to 1.5 metres paved shoulder and 2 metres earthen shoulder for pedestrians and two-wheelers. A pedestrian underpass at Hindustan Engineering College at Pudur is also underway for locals and college students of Pudur; vehicular underpass at Kovalam road offers connectivity to ECR. The Kelambakkam bypass which is 4.67 km will contain openings at medians at two points. According to official sources, there will be openings for Tiruporur bypass at the medians at SARE apartment, OMR Amla and salt factory. Also, the vehicle volume on OMR alone clocks an excess of 80,000 a day and is estimated to reach 1,00,000 in the next 3 years.
